Good Humor by CK Steefel's avatar

I’m with you, sistah. I was perfectly happy making chili and cookies at home while my kids were skiing. And when hubby wasn’t in the mood we were thrilled when the kids were 12 and we could drop them off at the slope, make them promise a hundred items to obey the safety list and if they needed help, see Penny, a friend working in the ski shop who’s boyfriend was an instructor. No cell phones back then. I don’t mind cold if I’m bundled up but speed is not my friend. I’m also not coordinated. Hypermobility and scoliosis were cause for poor balance. Love this piece. So funny and triggered great memories.

Cookies! What a great alternative to skiing!

And, I love "H's" poem -- she was always so clever.

And I did immediately think Star Wars with "L" holding his crutch...of course I was thinking fancy light saber not storm trooper.

I bet it was a light saber! Which one goes "pew pew pew"?

"BILL LET ME REMIND YOU THAT ALL THREE PHASES OF THE GAME INCLUDES OFFENSE".

This! Yes I laughed out loud.

I love skiing, but have a healthy fear of it too. I love being outside on a clear, crisp day and seeing the beautiful view around me, but I often also wonder "Why am I doing this" when I am on steep, icy terrain and my anxiety is up to 11. But I try every year. And I do have an injury, tore my UCL in my thumb and needed surgery, so that was fun.

As always, thank you for making me laugh out loud.

I broke my collarbone skiing in a very dumb tip-over moment going very slowly. I do not attribute it to speed or vertical feet, but tiredness (end of day) and lack of focus. I did get back on the horse the next year but was timid… and I was ok with going slower and taking less risk. Then, I demoed some new skis in a moment when I would have been renting anyway. And they were magic. I am NOT someone who generally thinks more expensive or newer gear makes you a better athlete, but these skis are SO much more stable than my old ones, they have made me a MUCH better skier and I go faster and steeper and feel like I’m taking half the risk I was before. I do like playing with my relationship to gravity and my terrestrial existence (see also: scuba diving). It is not about adrenaline or fear or risk for me, it’s about pushing the boundaries of what physical parameters I can experience as a human. There’s lots of ways to do that. Skiing is one.

I am unfamiliar with "pushing the boundaries of physical parameters." I will have to consider that from the couch later...actually the couch has become quite compressed. Maybe those are the parameters?

Yes injured while skiing (snowboarding)- torn ACL. I didn't realize that skiing without injury was an option. Was it worth it? That specific run definitely didn't justify the injury. I wish I could say it was in pursuit of massive air or something like that, but really I was just learning, moving slowly, someone cut me off and I just flopped over and heard my knee pop. My dad was furious at me and refused to take me to the hospital while my knee swelled up with blood. Good times. I can't think about football yet, right now it's time to get serious about NHL post season. I have done 1000 piece puzzles and I got a 2000 piece puzzle for Christmas but I haven't done it yet- it's just a fantasy in a box at this point. I find that doing puzzles helps me clear my head. I went down the rabbit hole a little while back reading about how how 500, 1000, 2000 piece puzzle don't actually have that number of pieces. (500 is commonly 513, 1000 is commonly 1026. I think this is why I have trust issues.) Oh and that writing about the dentist was great.

There's a long story I'll spare you about a ski trip I was supposed to take my senior year of high school to learn to ski but didn't (thanks, mom), but now? Hell no. Snowshoeing I would totally be into. Love a power walk. If not, I'll be the one reading or writing by the fire and will have the cocktails ready when you return. xo
