I write but not for the reasons you do. I write to explain or figure out my answer to some question, usually about politics, but sometimes broader: like what is a good neighbor? There's a great book bny Nicholas Delbanco, Why We Write. But you're not speaking for we, just you.

This resonated with me in more ways than one. Incidentally, a couple of weeks ago, I wrote on what you can describe as my one-word answer to “What do you do?”.

I'm still trying to figure out why I write and I wonder if it would make it easier to do so if I understood why. Maybe I write fiction to express things I somehow can't express in my day-to-day life (I've started to realise how awful I am at assessing or vocalising my own needs), or else just to understand myself or the world around me. I do obviously like when my work is read by others, but I still can't say I really write FOR an audience.
